Chillicothe and Ross County Public Library is sponsoring a summer reading program called Dream Big, which is open to both kids and adults. This year's program offers prizes for all children who read a certain number of hours, with young adult and adult readers earning entries for prize drawings for each book they read.

Children too young to read can earn prizes when someone reads to them, and school aged children earn for two, four, six, eight, and ten hours of reading completed. Bookmarks, McDonald's coupons and books are among the prizes listed for kids to earn at each level.

For each book they read, young adults and adults will earn one entry each into both the weekly and grand prize drawings. The weekly prizes vary, with one grand prize winner selected to win a Kindle Touch.

As a freelance writer, I publish a good amount of material about pets in general and more specifically, dogs. Many of my articles are at Yahoo! Voices and Shine, and one of them even made the front page of Yahoo! in January, where it was viewed by more than a million and a half readers. I've also started writing more local dog-related pieces for Examiner.

I'm always looking for local topics to write about, so if you have a dog-related business - veterinarian, grooming, dog-walking, anything about canines - let me hear from you. I love to feature dog rescue organizations, so if you have a fundraiser, adoption, or any other similar event planned that involves dogs, send a shout out to OhioDogExaminer@gmail.com. I can publish anything about Ross County up to Columbus and surrounding areas, and enjoy supporting my local community and small businesses.
If you’d like to keep more money in your wallet, you should consider doing business with a credit union instead of a bank. Banks are in business to make money for themselves, whereas credit unions are run by the membership. Not only are interest rates on mortgages, car and personal loans generally lower at a credit union, the interest rate you can earn on funds you deposit into a checking or savings account is usually higher than what you’d earn at a traditional banking institution.

Most credit unions offer the same services that banks do – savings accounts, checking accounts, online banking, debit cards, credit cards, overdraft protection, etc. Membership requirements will vary by establishment, but most credit unions open membership to a large demographic and even if you don’t qualify yourself, you can often qualify through a family member.

There are three credit unions located in the Chillicothe and Ross County area:

Atomic Employees Credit Union’s main branch is located in Waverly, with other branches scattered throughout southern Ohio. The Chillicothe branch is located on N. Bridge St., next to Chipotle Mexican Grill. Membership is open to anyone who resides, works, or worships in one of 14 counties, as well as their families residing elsewhere.

Chivaho Federal Credit Union is located on the grounds of the VA Medical Center on State Route 104 in Chillicothe. Membership is open to anyone who lives, works, attends worship or school in Ross County.

Homeland Credit Union has two offices in Chillicothe, as well as offices in Circleville, Greenfield, and Waverly. Membership is open to anyone who lives or works in one of nine southern Ohio counties.

With the number of credit union locations available in south/central Ohio, there’s no reason to give your money to a faceless national bank. Keep your money in Ross County and support your local community.
I recently decided to buy a futon for my spare bedroom/craft room and wanted something decent, but didn't want to spend a lot of money since it would be rarely used. I stopped by several places in Chillicothe to compare quality and prices, and was told that Beds 'n' Stuff on Bridge St (formerly the waterbed place, recently moved next door to Kroger) had a good selection.

(c) Marie Anne St. Jean

They did have quite a few futons to choose from, but the prices were higher than what I was willing to pay. Even if I did have money to spare, however, it would not have been spent in Beds 'n' Stuff.

It might be cliche that first impressions are important, but they truly are. When I walked in the door and had to wend my way around sofas that were positioned almost blocking the entryway, I wasn't impressed. I was less pleased that what you first see on entry looked like what we used to call a 'head shop' (is that term still used today?).

I wasn't greeted by anyone, so I ventured off to see what I could find on my own. I sat on futons and daybeds, checked prices, pulled out trundles. I did this the full length of the store and back, sometimes more than once on certain pieces, hoping to catch someone's attention so I could ask questions. I really didn't want to venture into the non-bedding part of the establishment, so when 20-30 minutes went by without being acknowledged by anyone, I decided I'd wasted enough time. Before walking out, I paused to look at the sofas by the door, thinking surely an employee would see me then since I was right in front of the 'other' part of the store, and I could hear people talking.

Nope. Out I went, my money still in my pocket.

Beds 'n' Stuff probably lost a $400-500 sale that day. Instead, WalMart got my $220 and I couldn't be happier. I didn't have to go searching for an employee to help me, and while I didn't get the fanciest futon in town, it serves my needs well.
I have two dogs, two cats, plus a stray that's made my yard her home, so I need to make every penny count while still providing them the love and care they need. When the stray mama cat decided to bring me two consecutive litters of her kittens to take care of, I knew I had to somehow catch her and get her spayed before things got even more out of hand. She wasn't really my cat, but if I didn't help with a solution, I guess I was part of the problem with cat overpopulation. Dr. Pelfrey and her staff at the Animal Care Clinic to the rescue!
I needed to spay mama cat as well as get shots and neuter one of the male kittens I'd kept from the first litter, so I called around to check on prices. I didn't qualify for the reduced spay/neuter fee through the local Humane Society, so after letting my fingers do the walking, I found that not only was the Animal Care Clinic on Western Ave. close by, they also had the best prices of the veterinarians in my area.

Mama cat got spayed, little Redneck got neutered, and I brought Boo (male kitten from second litter) to get fixed when he was old enough too. All surgeries went without incident with no further treatment required.

With four critters that need flea meds, Dr. Pelfrey has been able to save me a significant amount of that monthly fee each month as well. The prices at Animal Care Clinic beat even the advertised specials you find on TV and online. She mixes her own doses of Revolution for cats, saving me even more.

If you're looking for a reputable veterinarian in Chillicothe or Ross County, Dr. Pelfry and the staff at Animal Care Clinic are worth a look.
Last year I completed the A-Z Blogging Challenge on four different blogs. It was tough to do and I was going to pass on it this year, but kept changing my mind from one day to the next. Even as I was waking this morning, the first day of the challenge, I was thinking about whether I should try it again but with just one blog, or perhaps two.

Angie made up my mind for me - she entered two of her blogs and challenged me to do the same, so here I am. I'll be blogging each day in April (except the remainder of Sundays) on something that corresponds with each letter of the alphabet from A to Z. I chose to do it on this blog because it's the one blog I didn't enter last year, and I entered Write, Wrong or Indifferent into the challenge for the second year.
I'm ready. Bring it.
I was researching to write an article for Examiner today and found something interesting. The Ross County Auditor maintains a database of dog license information, so if you find a dog in your area that has a current dog license tag, it's easy to find the owner who may have lost him. Even without a tag, you can search by breed, address, etc.

Who would have thought any government agency in Ross County capable of such a thing?
Marie Annehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15838079550433002806noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-224793564355064786.post-62126047527113787642012-01-06T22:32:00.000-05:002012-09-17T10:47:17.542-04:00Tangles Hair Salon - Get Untangled in Chillicothe

I haven't had a 'regular' hairdresser in years, usually just pop in somewhere while I'm out running errands. I'm sometimes disappointed when I pop back out but eh, it's only hair and mine grows fast so I don't usually stress too much about it.

I was badly in need of a haircut a month or so ago and my travels brought me down Western Ave. in Chillicothe, so I turned in to Central Center to give Tangles a try.

The salon wasn't busy that day so I was seated right away. I had an idea of what I wanted done (I'm easy, just cut my hair) but after Alexia and I chatted a bit, she convinced me to go in a little different direction. Nothing crazy, no weird colors or spiked hair or anything, just a cut that she thought would fit better with the way my hair lays (lies?) naturally. Since I can't even wield a basic brush and hair dryer at the same time ( or separately, for that matter), I put my head in her hands and gave her carte blanche to do her thing. She wasn't pushy about it, but I could tell she enjoys what she does and felt comfortable trusting her to do me right.

I was more than satisfied when I left Tangles that day; walked out feeling like a million for just fifteen bucks.

A New Year and I was in need of a haircut again, so Tangles was on my list of stops today. Alexia wasn't working, but Hillary fixed me up just fine. Two trips to the same salon with no need to hide my head for a week, so I think it's safe to say I have a new hairdresser in Chillicothe.

Great haircut and friendly service for a good price.
When I purchased my home more than two years ago, I also bought into major structural problems, more than your run of the mill fixer-upper. After months of dealing with my real estate agent and the mortgage company, I was told I was on my own. I needed to find a contractor and being new in the area, I had no one to ask for recommendations.

With only the phone book and internet to guide me, I stumbled onto Arrow Construction. After checking Better Business Bureau ratings (all good), I called to schedule a consultation and was more than pleased with Ed Detty’s presentation of his estimate of the work needed and how his team would tackle the job.

The damage was extensive and ended up being a lengthy project, but I was pleased with the progress made. While the whole mess wasn’t a very enjoyable experience, the Arrow Construction team did their best to make it the least unpleasant for me as possible, tolerating my numerous questions and looking over their shoulders as they worked.

While I’ve still got a long way to go in making this house truly a home, Arrow Construction gave me a big start with quality work at a fair price, and even threw in a few extras along the way. I have new plumbing throughout and a brand new bathroom from the foundation up, and I’m no longer concerned about floors giving out or walls crumbling down around me.

Hiring Arrow Construction bought me peace of mind, and you can’t put a price on that.
Marie Annehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15838079550433002806noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-224793564355064786.post-33173218064668861552011-08-09T10:48:00.001-04:002011-08-09T12:42:16.623-04:00Veterans Admitted Free at Ross County Fair
The 2011 Ross County Fair opened Saturday, August 6 and runs through Saturday, August 13th. Maple St. I've been wanting to explore local antique shops and a quick search online brought me to the website that boasted of over 24,000 sf of space filled with antiques, so how could I pass that up?

The advertised hours are 12:00 - 5:00 Tuesday through Sunday (closed Monday), so I headed out around noon and stopped for lunch at Bainbridge Timbers before landing at The Trading Post to do some shopping.

Paula greeted me (as did a friendly kitty) and gave me a quick rundown of the various buildings and also shared that all items were 20% off (with quilts at a 50% savings). As I wandered through time, quite a few things caught my eye - bottles, kitchenware, tools and farm equipment, and an overflow of antique furniture - but money being tight, I had to pass them by, even at bargain prices.

I did find a quilt rack that was listed for $30 and marked down to $15, so that was definitely going home with me if I could get it into my small car. I crochet baby blankets and afghans and have been looking for a quilt rack to use as a photo prop and this was perfect, and a great price. Paula sweetened the deal by giving me the additional discount, so I picked it up for a mere $10. She then showed me how easy it was to take apart, so into the car it went!

I treated myself to a short drive to Bainbridge this afternoon, and started off with lunch at Bainbridge Timbers located on Hwy 50.

Bainbridge Timbers is a small Mom & Pop-type restaurant with a typical bill of fare that you'd expect in most diners that size. The menu choices include breakfast, lunch and dinner, and I was also offered one of several daily specials (although the waitress used another word, which escapes me at the moment). One special was a chicken salad croissant with chips, another was a combo chicken salad plate with cottage cheese and fresh fruit at a cost of $5.50.

Fresh fruit sounded good to me on a hot day, so I ordered the chicken salad combo but substituted macaroni salad for the cottage cheese. My order arrived within a reasonable time and the plate was heaped with food.

I was served a large platter with a generous scoop of both macaroni and chicken salad centered on a lettuce leaf, surrounded by an abundance of fresh fruit which included banana slices, strawberries, grapes, watermelon, and pineapple. Both salads were tasty and the fruit was bright and fresh. The presentation was very pleasing to the eye for such a simple meal.

The staff at Bainbridge Timbers was attentive without being bothersome, and interacted with the customers, most of whom seemed to be regular diners.

The dining area was fairly cramped, but overall, I enjoyed my meal at The Bainbridge Timbers today. Good food at a decent price served by pleasant wait staff is hard to top, and they pulled it off with simple, country charm.

I enjoyed my first meal at The Bainbridge Timbers today, but I'm sure it won't be my last.
I usually purchase my gas with a gift card at the Chillicothe Walmart and save .03 per gallon all year, but the current rollback promotion of a .10 savings is an even sweeter deal.
I desperately needed new contact lenses, so I grabbed the phone book to call other local optometrists to compare prices.

One call was answered by a receptionist who had no idea what the price was for an examination and she put me on hold to check; when she didn’t come back after 3-4 minutes, I terminated the call. Two others quoted prices that seemed high to me, which I assumed was going to be the norm (I don’t have insurance so have to pay out of pocket). The last call I made was to Dr Schaefer’s office, whose price was considerably less than the other two and just a few dollars higher than the optometrist’s office where I received lousy service.

My call was handled in a professional manner and we scheduled an appointment for a full examination and fitting on June 24. I arrived just a few minutes before my scheduled appointment and was greeted immediately and whisked into the examination room within just a moment or two. Friendly staff did a quick check of my peripheral vision, asked several questions, then turned me over to Dr Schaefer.

I found Dr Schaefer to be a very pleasant man who listened to my concerns and what I had to say after 25 year experience wearing contact lenses. He then provided his professional recommendation, taking my needs and experience into consideration. Other doctors have tried to sell me on products that I was unhappy with, likely because they were encouraged by manufacturers to push a particular product. My visit with Dr Schaefer was a welcome change and I felt my eye care was more of a team approach.

The contact lenses we agreed to try weren’t in stock, but should be available in the next day or two. I’ll go back for a fitting at that time, and I’ve no doubt that the service I receive will be the same pleasant experience I enjoyed during my initial examination. Kudos to Dr Schaefer and his staff for providing great service at a reasonable price.
After buying the newspaper on Sunday, June 5, I ventured out to Walgreens on Western Ave in Chillicothe to see what kind of bargains I could snatch up.

The store had only been open a short time when I got there and I don’t think there were any other customers in the store. One of the clerks was still putting out the sale price stickers on some of the shelves and when she saw me looking for an item on my list, she was most helpful in helping me locate it.

As I was comparing the various Garner Fructis shampoos that were on sale, the young lady at the counter in the middle of the store asked if I wanted a coupon for the shampoo, saying she had plenty that she’d never be able to use. I already had coupons for my purchase but I thought that was very nice of her to offer. She offered to ring up my purchase when I finished shopping and was patient with me as we went through the process of matching coupons and explained more about how the RR (register rewards) program worked and how to get the best deal.

Overall, my trip to Walgreens on Western Ave in Chillicothe was a very pleasant experience. Both employees that I had contact with were helpful and courteous. They’ll get more of my business.
Cactus and succulents in a rock garden is an example of a basic xeriscape.

Ohioans ordinarily need not be familiar with xeriscaping, although with the near drought conditions we experienced last year, I was thinking about it. This year, however, is a different story. We haven't had a dry day here in weeks and I'm sure whatever water tables were lacking in 2010 have been more than made up for thus far in 2011.

Southern Ohio farmers aren't able to get their fields planted because of the rain and further delay will likely hurt this year's summer crop. According to the NOAA, the city of Columbus received 7.14" of rain last month, breaking the over 100-year-old record of 7.08" of rainfall during April 1893. Only four days into May but no break in the weather yet.
Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today announced that the Federal Aviation Administration has awarded an additional $80,497 to the Ross County Airport to upgrade and extend its taxiway. The new funding will be combined with the original $703,386 grant to cover all project costs.

“A strong transportation infrastructure encourages economic development and helps Ohio’s communities thrive,” Brown said. “This funding will provide the aviation enthusiasts, small business owners, and other residents of Ross County with a safe, modern facility that will serve them for years to come.”

The improvement project will upgrade the current taxiway surface, change its design to meet current standards, and remove trees and homes to extend the taxiway.

The Ross County Airport is a publicly owned facility on 340 acres near Chillicothe, Ohio.

What will this improvement and expansion mean for Chillicothe and Ross County? A few jobs I'm sure, at least for the short term. But how many homes will be removed and what impact will it have on the current homeowners/inhabitants?
